One thing we have discovered....if you use the USB command from the P2140 to tell the PC to enter hibernation, you can use the BIOS setting "resume after power is restored" as the method to resume from hibernation. This seems to work on most PCs. We have had many problems trying to get the USB resume from standby to work properly. So....if you don't want to "solder" wires to your laptop power switch you *can* use the USB ACPI command to tell the laptop to enter *hibernate* and use the BIOS setting "resume after power is restored" to wake the PC from hibernation. This method gets rid of the ACPI cable requirement.

This is great! This will rid me of any potential problems of draining my battery as I recently had! I will try this asap... hope my BIOS supports it!!

Since we can boot after power failure, can we set the P2140 to send "Shut Down" signal via USB?

This is exactly what they're doing, and it works as advertised... great stuff!
heh -- just now noticed this sticky has been dead for over a year :P |

will this work on non-laptops as long as the motherboard supports resume after power failure? i hope to try it out on an Artigo pico-itx system.

It should for most boards, but I think you'll run into problems using the Pico-itx board.
In order for you to be able to use the USB ACPI option, the system has to be setup for stand-by mode (power must be maintained on the USB bus for the system to be able to be woken up by the P2140). The problem with the Pico-ITX boards is that they consume too much power during stand-by mode causing the P2140 to cut power, so you'll have no way of starting the PC by using the USB ACPI option. Try it out and let me know how it goes, maybe via fixed their standby problem with the Pico boards.

yeah, i saw dejan's post about the pico-itx not supporting s3 standby so it draws over 0.5amp.
i'm asking about hibernation mode, though. if i use the USB ACPI to hibernate the computer, won't it shut off power anyway after hibernation, and when i restart the car and power is started, won't it resume after power failure? also, i'm sending out my P2140 RMA today. how quick is the turn around? |

I haven't played around with the BIOS resume after power failure option so I'm not sure how well it works.
As you know it's worked for some. It doesn't quite make sense to me since I wouldn't consider a graceful shutdown (full or hibernate) as a "power failure," so no reason for the PC to boot after it gracefully shuts down, even if the BIOS option is enabled. But then again it apparently works, so who knows? Try it out and let me know. RMAs are usually quick , a few days to a week, unless your P2140 is really fried.

I'll be doing RMA's today and tomorrow so you should have an update in the next couple of days.
